Overview

Start your Audio Collection journey.

Studio microphone with a pop shield at a desk, acoustic panel behind and audio level bars beside it

Voice AI has to understand people as they actually speak: every language, every accent, every room. That data comes from paid contributors reading scripts, holding natural conversations and recording sound events at home.

In this modality a quiet room beats an expensive microphone, and an under-represented language or accent is often the hardest thing a project can source. If you speak one, that is an advantage here, not a footnote.

This course covers the audio project landscape, from scripted reading and wake words to multi-speaker sessions and non-speech sound events; room, distance and levels, the three things that decide whether a recording is usable, taught with listening exercises because this is a skill you cannot read your way into; exact scripts and why a single improvised word is a rejection; voices as biometric data, and the background radio that counts as copyright contamination and fails whole batches; and a review shift where you judge audio submissions yourself. Around 1 to 2 hours, self-paced; the free Data Collection Basics first is recommended.

One of the eight courses of the Data Collection Foundations certification programme: pass all eight to become a Certified Data Collector. Available on its own or under the programme fee; certificate included on passing.

Outline

What you'll learn

  1. Audio Collection Projects

Which audio projects exist, and why accents and languages carry quotas.

  2. Your Recording Environment

How room, microphone distance, and levels decide audio acceptance.

  3. Speaking for AI

What natural delivery, exact scripts, and silence padding mean in practice.

  4. Audio Rules and Privacy

Why voices are biometric data, and what contaminates a recording.

  5. Judging Audio Submissions

What the audio rejection catalogue contains, and how listening back prevents it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this course.

Most learners finish in 1 to 2 hours, self-paced. Each of the five units has reading and a practice quiz with instant feedback, and interactive exercises run throughout the course. The final knowledge assessment has an 80% pass mark. You can retake it as many times as you need, with 24 hours between attempts, and your highest score counts.

It's designed for beginners, and it is particularly worth taking if you speak a language, dialect, or accent that speech models rarely hear, which is the shortage the industry is trying to fill. No AI knowledge, no audio background, and no studio are required. Data Collection Basics is the recommended starting point, but this course doesn't assume it.

Usually not. Most projects record on a phone, and a quiet room with soft furnishings does more for audio quality than expensive equipment does. What matters is a consistent microphone distance, levels that never clip, no background noise the project excludes, and silence padding at the start and end. The course covers how to set that up with what you already own.

Reading, interactive scenario exercises, and knowledge checks on the e-learning platform. It teaches the conventions of audio collection: project types and quotas, recording environment, delivery for scripted and spontaneous speech, voice privacy rules, and how reviewers decide. Any at-home recording practice it suggests is optional, and nothing you record is uploaded, reviewed, or marked by DeeLab.

Because a voice identifies a person. Speech recordings are biometric data in most privacy regimes, so consent forms on real projects are specific about how a recording may be used, whether it may be shared or resold, and how long it is kept. The course covers how to read those terms before you agree to them, which is a large part of protecting yourself in this work.

The other Data Collection Foundations courses are the natural next step, and each is available on its own or under the programme fee: video, images, web research, conversational AI data, and human feedback. If listening is your strength, Audio Annotation Basics in the Data Annotation Basics track is the labelling-side companion. You can also record your languages, accents, equipment and availability in the freelance and gig work section of your trainee profile, which is what DeeLab looks at when a speech project needs contributors.

Yes. The certificate is included in the course fee and is issued automatically once you pass the final assessment and leave your course feedback, and in any case within a week of passing. Pass all eight Data Collection courses and the programme certificate, the Certified Data Collector award, follows automatically as well.

You have three months to complete the course, counted from the day you sign up. Within that window it is entirely self-paced and always open; your progress is saved automatically and you can return whenever suits you.
